Oak Georgian Welsh Coffor Bach c.1770-1800
A classic example of a Georgian Welsh coffor bach made entirely of well patinated oak. The detachable lid, made from a single piece, has its original wooden strut hinges and a moulded edge. The waisted base contains a single drawer above a triple-arched frieze. The sides have ogee-arched friezes. The brassware appears to be largely original, including the unusual addition of large brass carrying handles.
Carmarthenshire/Glamorganshire c.1770-1800.
Dimensions: 65 cms wide, 31 cms deep and 48 cms high.
The coffor bach, a piece that is peculiar to Wales and especially the south western counties, was traditionally associated with marriage. A bride could store her most precious, small possessions inside and it was often passed down through the female line.
