Large Diorama of a Three Masted Sailing Ship "Ariel" circa 1880-1900

£985.00

A splendid folk art diorama of a three masted sailing ship “Ariel”.
Shown fully rigged and flying the British merchant ensign and her owner’s house-flag, she does not, however, fly a four-letter unique identifying code which would have identified a specific vessel.

Set on a stylized blue/green sea against a cloud-painted ground with a painted three-masted barque and small steamship to the right and in its original glazed case with giltwood frame. Circa 1880-1900

Dimensions: 91 cms wide, 14 cms deep, 44.5 cms high.

Probably the most famous “Ariel” was the three‑masted tea clipperbuilt in 1865 by Robert Steele & Co., Greenock, Scotland.

She was often depicted in paintings and engravings and became famous for the Great Tea Race of 1866, finishing just 20 minutes behind Taeping after 99 days and nearly 16,000 miles — one of the closest races in clipper history.
