Georgian Oak Coffor Bach of Rare and Unusual Form c.1760-1780
A fine and rare example of a traditional Welsh miniature coffer, or Coffor Bach, of unusual form and excellent colour and patina.
Larger than many, it has a detachable lid, thumb nail moulded on three sides. The pair of well figured, recessed panels below are of highly unusual outline for a coffor bach and enhanced by a band of chequered, dog`s tooth inlay.
The waisted lower part has a charming, three drawer arrangement in a triple ogee-arched frieze with cabriole legs ending in unusual pad feet. The brassware is not original but old and in appropriate style.
West Wales, c.1760-1780.
Dimensions: 65 cms wide, 41 cms deep and 51 cms high.
The coffor bach, a piece that is peculiar to Wales and especially the south western counties, was traditionally associated with marriage. A bride could store her most precious, small possessions inside and it was often passed down through the female line.
