Rare Oak and Inlaid Coffor Bach, Initialled and Dated 1739

Sold

A remarkable Welsh, oak and chequer-strung, Coffor Bach, the hinged lid with a moulded edge above a central, brass-inlaid date of 1739 with the initials M and W , also of brass inlay, at either end. The two, rounded- arch, fielded panels have highly unusual arched bases. The drawer below has a fielded-panel front, above a shaped frieze. The brassware, apart from the drawer escutcheon, is original and there is no evidence the drawer was ever fitted with loop handles - just the backplates.
We have had the applied “D” moulding reinstated.
Probably West Wales, most likely Carmarthenshire or Pembrokeshire, 1739.

The panel form alone would make this coffer highly unusual, the striking two-tiered arches highlighted by the surrounding band of chequer inlay.
Also, initials and dates on these small coffers, whilst desirable, are not uncommon. However, the use of brass as an inlay is incredibly rare on a coffor bach. I don`t recall ever having seen another in over forty years in the trade.

Literature:

1992 Regional Furniture Journal, “ The Gower Coffor Bach” where I included images of a group of carved coffers, most with initials along with another in image 7 with inlaid initials and date.

Dimensions:

74 cms wide, 40 cms deep and 46 cms high.
