George II Oak Chest On Stand

A decidedly “smart” piece of English furniture of rich colour and good patina, very much in the manner of a walnut veneered chest, this example is made from attractively figured “brown” oak for the drawer fronts, all of which are crossbanded in fruitwood, lined with pine and retaining their original, engraved brassware.

The bold cornice sits above a concealed, cushion-moulded frieze drawer.

Its original stand has a broad, overhanging waist moulding and a cockbeaded edge to the shaped and stepped frieze.

The cabriole legs are carved with foliage to the knees and have moulded edges which extend downwards to the squared, stepped and splayed pad feet.
Circa 1730-50.

Dimensions:

105 cms wide at the waist, 107 cms wide at the knees, 168.5 cms high, and 59 cms deep.

Literature: see “Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740” by Adam Bowett, page 158, plate 4:26, for a cabriole-legged chair with similar, distinctively shaped front feet, ascribed a date range of 1715-1730. Also page 171 plate 4:54, a chair from Erddig near Wrexham, circa 1720-26.
